CHILD VICTIMS of WAR
Linking children's
rights with environmental rights...
"Whereas mankind owes
to the child the best it has to give."
- Declaration of the rights of the child, 1959
Iraq has suffered several
decades of military action and thirteen years of gruelling embargo. Many Iraqi children are physically and emotionally
traumatised. Damage to vital infrastructure has resulted in sickness an malnutrition; extensive bombing and the use
of cluster bombs are leaving many permanently disabled, and the fallout of depleted uranium weapons is creating
genetic birth defects, cancers and rare kidney and liver disorders.
Environmental damage created by war undermines the right to
health of the most vulnerable sectors in society, in particular
the children. Child Victims of War supports the right of
the Iraqi child to a healthy and happy childhood by working with
local communities to monitor children's rights; research the environmental
effects of war; support advocacy campaigns, and to help build
and equip children's medical and rehabilitation centres.
